You will be "hands-on" with real training radios.

About our SRC Courses

We operate a short waiting list during parts of the year when the demand for SRC courses is not great. We can usually fix one for you if you urgently need to complete the course. If we do this, we would be happy to quote you.
Our next course will be on :

Sunday 19th February 2012

Picture of Raymarine 54E VHF Radio.
If no date is shown, the above about the waiting list applies. In either event - do E-mail or phone us to say you want to do this course.

The SRC course is a one-day course covering DSC & GMDSS procedures.

  • SRC means Short Range Certificate.
  • DSC means Digital Selective Calling.
  • DSC is used on up-to-date Marine VHF Radios.
  • GMDSS is the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System
Attendance of this course is necessary to obtain the Maritime Radio Operator Certificate of Competence, Short Range Certificate. You need to pass an examination.

ICOM VHF Radio This is your "Operators Licence" and the certificate carries a passport-sized photograph of you for ID purposes. The certificate is only issued in the UK by the RYA for leisure sailors.

The course duration is 8 hours. This includes the exam. Our normal charge for providing this course is £80 per-person. We normally provide this course for just four persons. We may do this course for fewer people and our absolute maximum is six.

The course and exam covers topics other than VHF radio, which are associated with GMDSS. You need to understand these other topics and know a little about them, even if you do not intend to go to Sea. The course is suitable for Motor or Sailing Yacht crew, Fishermen, Inland Waterway users, Dive Safety Boat personnel and users of Personal Water Craft.

The RYA Book "VHF Radio (inc GMDSS)" Ref G22 is included. When we have received your booking form and payment, we will post G22 to you. If your booking is received too close to the course date, it will be in the materials handed out on the day.
If we do post this book to you in advance, you must remember to bring it with you on the day of the course.

Before the day you must learn the Phonetic Alphabet, Numerals and the MAYDAY voice procedure.
We provide a webpage link for you with this information.

We will advise you where your course will be held and we will provide a webpage with a map and perhaps directions of how to get there. You will be advised of the course starting time. We hope you arrive in good time, but we might be busy when you arrive, setting up the equipment. We hope you will understand that we probably will have only had access to the room 30 minutes before the time your course is due to start.

During the day we will provide you with Tea and Coffee. We may provide biscuits. We should have ordinary Tea, De-Caff Tea and both ordinary Coffee and De-Caff Coffee. We will have ordinary semi-skimmed cow's milk and sugar available. If you need something a little different, you need to tell us in advance.

You must bring your own lunch. We will probably take a 30-45 minute recess at lunchtime. There may not be a shop to buy sandwiches close to the venue, though there may well be one a ten-minute drive away. We may show an appropriate video during the lunch recess.

For the Licence application, you must bring:
  • One passport-sized photograph of yourself with your name written (lightly in pencil) on the reverse.
  • A separate cheque for £30 payable to RYA or a Bank Debit or Credit Card you wish to charge. In the case of a card payment, you will be asked to write your card detail on the application form that we will normally post for you. Please do not pay this money to us.
